The Story

One of my earliest projects as a new executive was “The Beast” battery case for iPhone 5. New to Silicon Valley and product management, this project taught me the ropes in the industry and will always hold a special place for me. The goal of the Beast was to provide the industries strongest battery case to market.

Concept

The Beast was essentially a casing that locked on to your cell-phone with the use of 6 screws. The goal was to make the phone completely impenetrable to almost any type of damage – perfect for extreme sports fanatics and working people in harsh environments. As such, our primary goal was to show how the case accomplished all of this. We used an “exploded” view render to better explain.

Style

Because of the rugged nature of the product and it being strongly tailored to men, we decided to work with concepts that would strongly relate to that particular demographic. Dark, bold coloring, and an outdoors theme helped compliment the design.

In fact, the inspiration for the logo came from the CEO’s golf club…

Production

Production on marketing components focused on drawing men towards the packaging, as well as explaining how the product worked, considering it was more complicated that other products on the market.

Early Website Development

The website was built off simple short pages, focusing on different elements of the protective casing. Each tab circling the phone case was clickable – explaining either a feature or benefit of the case.

Video Production

Featuring both, live-action and rendered production videos. As this was a fresh start-up company, budget was tight. In the end, we were successfully able to make both videos COMBINED under a budget of $10k.

Final Notes

While the Beast ultimately did not make it to market, the ability to create such a strong marketed product on a small budget and time-frame was a fun experience, and helped establish industry connections that I still use to this day.
